Students’ understanding of the history, values, politics, communication styles, economy, or beliefs and practices of other cultures is often superficial, at best. But as their knowledge of worldview frameworks deepens, students demonstrate an increasingly sophisticated understanding of these complex cultural elements and their importance to members of other cultures. But what exactly is knowledge of worldview frameworks, why is it important, and how can it be measured? What forms of teaching and learning are most effective in supporting student progress on this key dimension of intercultural knowledge and competence?

This unique professional development opportunity focused on the use of the Intercultural Knowledge and Competence VALUE Rubric to facilitate and assess student attainment of knowledge of cultural worldview frameworks. Developed by AAC&U’s Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education (VALUE) initiative to support the authentic assessment of student learning, the VALUE rubrics articulate fundamental criteria for essential learning outcomes and include performance descriptors demonstrating progressively more sophisticated levels of attainment.
