Shawn Miller

Associate Provost for Digital Learning and Strategy, Rice University

Shawn Miller is the Associate Provost for Digital Learning and Strategy at Rice University, where he serves as a key steward of the university's digital strategy and a member of the senior strategic leadership team. He guides digital innovation in teaching and partners with university leadership to ensure Rice's academic mission is central to every digital initiative. 

A leader in shaping the university's strategy for responsible AI, Shawn is an executive committee member of the Rice AI Advisory Committee. He is focused on developing cutting-edge curricula that weave AI and its ethical dimensions into every discipline. Before joining Rice in 2023, Shawn worked at Duke University, where he co-founded Duke Learning Innovation. For this work, his team was honored with the Duke Presidential Award for their leadership during the pandemic, which included developing the Flexible Teaching initiative.

With a career built on pioneering new educational models—from creating faculty hybrid academies at The University of Texas at El Paso to launching Duke's first Coursera courses—Shawn has consistently worked to expand access to education through technology. He is passionate about building campus-wide cultures of pedagogical experimentation and fostering deep conversations about the future of education in an age of AI.
